John Lawry, of Suntax, is a sole practitioner with two accountants and two support staff. The firm was first established in 1989, and has over 300 business clients.
The practice is located near Tullamarine Airport and as a result, Suntax have a substantial client base involved in aviation work and the firm specializes in small business.
John Lawry has not accepted a new business client for over three years. The practice has slightly above 4000 clients and is growing. “We don’t have the capacity. Our non-business clients keep turning into small business clients and this has maintained our growth at a very satisfactory level,” says John. “Our biggest challenge is finding staff to cope with the growth”.
Over 90% of John’s clients use Cashflow Manager. “When GST came in we did a review of all the available software and as a result of that we said we would only be recommending Cashflow Manager to our small business clients,” states John.

Cashflow Manager has enabled John’s clients to take more control over their financial bookkeeping. Over 90% of John’s clients who use the Cashflow Manager program successfully reconcile their records. John reports, “Only 10% used to reconcile their records with manual bookkeeping and only 50% of clients using other programs reconcile”.
John enforces a strict strategy with regards to recommending accounting software to clients: “We’ll only accept your work if you use Cashflow Manager unless you can demonstrate to us that you understand MYOB or Quickbooks because we have no capacity to do any training in those programs and they are comprehensive and complex programs. Cashflow Manager is comprehensive but it’s not difficult to learn.”
J K Lawry & Associates refer their clients to state distributor Pat Camm who holds fortnightly training courses for the program. John believes hands on computer training courses are the best avenues for training for his clients.
Cashflow Manager has proved very beneficial for John’s practice and his clients. “The main benefit of Cashflow Manager is that is has given us a significant increase in profitability. In response to other Accounting firms currently not recommending the program, John exasperates, “I can’t believe they are trying to use any other system! Because in Australia this is the most effective business program for small businesses.”
